Clamming At Holden Beach
Filed Under Holden Beach Vacations |
If you are bringing children under the age of 12 on a vacation to Holden Beach then you have to take a few hours one day and go clamming. Clamming is especially exciting for the younger children who can’t go shark fishing. It gives them a chance to feel like they are out in the water finding sea urchins like their older siblings. There is nothing more precious than to see a young child find a clam, yank it out of the water, and yell “hey mom, or dad, I got one!!”.
Before you can clam in Holden Beach, you have to obtain a salt water fishing license which can be purchased at Wal Mart, a drug store, or any of the fishing hubs along the beach area. You will also have to have a clam fork and a device called a caliper, which is used with the fork to catch the clams. The limit for clamming is 10 per day, per person. You may also want to bring a bucket along with you and fill it with ocean water to place the clams in. Once you catch a clam you will then throw it in the bucket and they will open slightly. You can then pry them open and remove it from its shell.
Good times can be had by all when going clamming. Just make sure that the clams measure about 4 1/2 inches in diameter or you will have to put them back where you found them. Also make sure to have a pretty strong scented soap back at your vacation property on Holden Beach, because your hands and arms will stink pretty bad.
